Art: 1 of several

Throughout the day today, I will post some paintings. Some people expressed dissapointment that I had never gotten around to them, so I will try to finish out my f-list for the next couple weeks.

Up this week: art for [livejournal.com profile] thalionar. Second image potentially NSFW given nekkid Rubensian lady, so I've just put a link instead of the actual image.

Two for you this week, lady.

This is a painting called Water #9 by Lee Krasner, the wife of Jackson Pollock.

It's the Union of Earth and Water by Rubens from the mid 1600's. I think it's just fabulously luscious.

ooooh! gorgeous!!! thank you :)

I hadn't seen Water #9, though I've seen other works by Krasner.

Also, the Rubens is fabulous!

Water #9 is a later work, late 60's I think, so after Pollock's death and a long fallow period for her. I love Krasner in general.

have you seen the movie Pollock?

[identity profile] thalionar.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
no, I've heard that it's really good, though.

It is *amazing*. Ed Harris gives a truly uncanny performance. And Marcia Gay Harden plays Lee, also amazing.

Have you ever seen the footage of Pollock painting? They recreate that, but not in a shoddy or weird way, but in a really impressive, inspired way. it's like watching a real fevered artist at work. It's long and slow, but a must see in my book.

I saw random bits of it when my father-in-law watched it once...very interesting...

it's really a great movie, especially if you are at all interested in 20th century art.

Seconded.

The Rubens is beautiful. I'm not really sure what to think of the Krasner, but that's cuz I'm not educated enough to say something smart...it's pretty though...

Krasner is playing with ideas like Abstract expressionism, where the goal is to break away from clear representational art, or art with spiritual/personal content, and focus just on line and color, and the emotive quality of the piece.

And you know, it's ok to like stuff just cause it's pretty. Unless it's Thomas Kinkade.

I take it he's the painter equivalent of Barbara Cartland?

[identity profile] foxxydancr.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
my standard comparison is that it's like the "painting" equivalent of Precious Moments figurines.

Who's barbara cartland? (goes off to google it)

Barbara is my guilty pleasure. If google or wiki won't help you, I'll tell you all.

I guess we all have these embarassing addictions. Mine is/was reality tv.
