This piece makes it look like the artist might actually have seen a naked woman before in his life. How odd.

some scholars have argued that it's a portrait of his common law wife, Hendrickje Stoffels. Either way, he had at least one wife and several mistresses, so there is documentable precedent for him having actually looked at a nude woman.

Also, I really love this painting.
